What Is a Casino?

Casino

A casino, or a gaming house, is a place where people can gamble. In the United States, casinos are regulated by the state government. Most states allow only licensed and supervised gambling clubs to operate.

Most casinos offer games of chance, with some having a skill element. In games where there is a skill element, the casino’s advantage is generally less than two percent. The house edge is the difference between the expected value of a bet (or payout) and the actual amount returned to the player. The casino earns this advantage by charging a commission known as the vig or rake. In poker and table games, this is typically a percentage of the total amount wagered.

Casinos are a source of revenue for their owners, and some have grown into entertainment complexes with elaborate hotels, restaurants and other amenities. They often feature fountains, pyramids and towers, replicating famous landmarks around the world.

In the United States, the most famous casinos are in Nevada. Las Vegas is home to the largest casino, which has 4.7 million square feet of gaming space and features 17 different types of tables. Casinos are also located on American Indian reservations, which are exempt from state anti-gambling laws.

Security is a major concern for casinos. In addition to cameras, casinos employ sophisticated technology to monitor game play. For example, betting chips with built-in microcircuitry connect to a computer system to oversee the exact amounts of money bet minute by minute; roulette wheels are electronically monitored regularly to discover any statistical deviation from their expected values. Many casinos employ expert gaming mathematicians and programmers to analyze game data and determine optimal strategy.
