The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game played with chips or cash. Players place an ante wager and then play a hand against the dealer. Optimum strategy says to play all hands greater than Queen, Six and Four and fold all hands worse. In the event of a tie, the highest cards in each player’s hand win the pot.

To play, each player places an ante wager and then receives three cards face down. A betting interval follows in which the player may raise or call. A player may also check, which means he doesn’t bet but reveals his hand to the other players. The player to the left of the button bets first.

A hand must consist of two distinct pairs of cards and a fifth card that is not an ace (for example, 4 jacks). The highest pair wins. A straight flush is five consecutive cards of the same suit (for example, 5 aces). A four of a kind is four cards of the same rank and an ace. The highest four of a kind beats all other hands. A high card breaks ties.

Poker requires quick instincts, which can be developed through practice and observation of experienced players. Observe how other players react to the cards and their opponents and consider how you would act in their shoes. This will help you develop your own style of play. If you can’t afford to play for money, try playing for free with friends to get the feel of the game.
