These impacts can be long-term or short-term. They can also be direct or indirect, and they may affect those directly involved in gambling activities as well as non-gamblers.

Supporters of gambling argue that it attracts tourism and therefore benefits the local economy. They also believe that limiting gambling would simply divert tax revenue to illegal gambling operations. However, critics of gambling point out that it can cause a range of social ills, including addiction, loss of self-esteem, family breakdown and depression. It can also have a detrimental effect on the wider society through increased crime and social care costs. However, there is no established way to measure the extent of gambling’s negative impacts.
