The Basics of Poker

Poker

The origin of the game of Poker is unknown. However, there are rumors that say the game was first played in Persia. Possibly, it was a variant of a game called poque, which came into use during the 17th century. It evolved alongside the German game pochen and a Spanish game called primero, and was later taken to the New World by French settlers. As of the present day, there are many variations of the game.

Most variations of poker use poker chips, with each chip worth a different amount. In games with at least seven players, it is common to use 200 chips. White chips are the lowest-valued. Red chips are worth five, blue chips are worth ten or twenty, and dark-colored chips are worth two, four, or five reds. A player “buys in” to the game by purchasing chips. Generally, the players buy in for the same amount.

The best hand in poker is a straight flush. The straight flush consists of five cards in the same suit. An ace can be high or low, but cannot wrap around two other cards. An ace high straight flush is also known as a royal flush and is the highest natural hand. The odds of obtaining a royal flush are 1 in nearly 650,000. The next best hand is a four of a kind. It can consist of any card.
