Poker is a card game played by two or more people. Each player has a fixed amount of money (‘chips’) to bet with, and the object is to make the best five-card hand. Depending on the game, this can be accomplished by betting on your own hand or by bluffing against other players. The game can be played with any number of players, but the ideal number is six or more.
Each player starts the round by putting in a small bet (‘ante’) into the pot before the cards are dealt. This is typically a small amount, such as one nickel per player. After this, the player to their left begins betting. Each player has a pair of hidden cards (called that player’s hole or pocket). A further three cards are then dealt face-up on the table, which are called the flop. These are community cards, which each player uses to build their final poker hand.
When the betting phase ends, the highest poker hand wins the pot. Ties are broken by using a high card, or more specifically by comparing the highest two pairs. A high pair consists of two distinct cards (such as K-A). If no pairs are present, then the highest single card wins the tie. The high card is used as a tie-breaker because it is less likely to be a mistake than any other combination of hands. Poker can also help develop better decision-making skills because it forces you to weigh the risks and rewards of each bet.
